Legislation: UIF parental leave regulations out for comment

Publish date: 04 September 2019
Issue Number: 302
Diary: Legalbrief Workplace

Draft amendments to regulations under the 2001 Unemployment Insurance Act dealing with parental benefits were gazetted this week for comment within 14 calendar days, reports Pam Saxby for Legalbrief Policy Watch. Once in force, they will give practical effect to provisions in sections 7, 8, 12, 13, 15 and 16 of the 2018 Labour Laws Amendment Act dealing with the leave entitlement of adoptive parents, commissioning parents in surrogacy arrangements and the fathers of new born babies. Expected to contribute to ‘stronger family ties’, these sections of the Act and its regulations will, among other things, enable men to play a greater role in the process of introducing children into their families and bonding with them (IoL).
