UN warns that Tigray conflict could spread

Publish date: 20 September 2021
Issue Number: 940
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Human rights

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has deplored ‘multiple and severe reports of alleged gross violations of human rights, humanitarian and refugee law’ committed by all parties to the conflict in Tigray. In an update to the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Ethiopia, Bachelet said the conflict ‘risks spilling over to the whole Horn of Africa’. She said mass detentions, killings, systematic looting and sexual violence have created ‘an atmosphere of fear and an erosion of living conditions that resulted in the forced displacement of the Tigrayan civilian population’.
