MP takes another swing at Museveni

Publish date: 09 September 2019
Issue Number: 840
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Uganda

The Monitor reports that controversial Ugandan lawmaker Bobi Wine has told people joining the People Power pressure group not to use it as an opportunity to grow their careers or political parties but instead remain focused on the struggle to end President Yoweri Museveni's 33-year reign. ‘Leave your political party, religion, tribe in your house and come focused on getting back our freedom that has been taken by the dictator, President Museveni,’ Wine said in Kampala last week. Legalbrief reports that the MP who serves the Kyaddondo East constituency, has had a series of high-profile run-ins with Museveni. In August 2018, he was arrested after his supporters obstructed and attacked a presidential convoy. He was arrested again in April for leading protests against social media taxes.
