The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged Gloria Chire, the treasurer of former Presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, with crimes against state security and criminal conspiracy. According to Club of Mozambique, Chire’s lawyer, Mutota Escova, confirmed the charges against his client. Chire was detained at her home on Wednesday and was apparently illegally held for 48 hours at the police station in Maputo port where she was allegedly denied contact with her lawyers and family. Mutota only managed to speak to Chire following an intervention by the Mozambican Bar Association. Mutota told reporters that the detention was illegal. The arrest warrant he was shown is dated from late February, and had never been presented to Chire. The police and prosecution attorneys have so far given no details of the ‘security offences’ she is supposed to have committed.
