Senior police official probed for bribery

Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC) plans to investigate allegations of bribery and abuse of office levelled against Assistant Inspector-General of Police Emmanuel Aina, the country’s Guardian newspaper says. The Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy in Africa Network earlier demanded a thorough probe and accused Aina of bribery and gross misconduct in a complex property dispute. Reacting to the centre’s protest, Ikechukwu Ani, spokesperson for the PSC, said the commission ‘wishes to state that it will look into the complaints and ensure that justice is served to both parties.’ Ani reiterated that the commission remains committed to holding police officers accountable for their actions and urged Nigerians to support the police to perform optimally. Ani also said the commission had launched a whistle-blowing policy, encouraging citizens to expose official corruption within the police and other institutions under the commission’s oversight.
