President John Mahama has taken a significant step toward fulfilling his promise to implement the constitutional review process by establishing a Constitution Review Committee, reports GBC Ghana Online. The committee, comprising experts from diverse fields, is tasked with addressing gaps and challenges in the implementation of past constitutional review efforts and recommending amendments to the 1992 Constitution. The committee, chaired by Professor Kwasi Prempeh, includes Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Professor Kwame Karikari, Charlotte Osei, Dr Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Amidu, Dr Esi Ansah and Dr Rainer Akumperigeya. Their mandate includes revisiting the work of the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee to identify implementation challenges. The committee will also engage key stakeholders to gather input on proposed amendments and make actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance. The committee has been given five months to complete its work and present its recommendations to the government for consideration. This development is expected to reignite discussions on constitutional reforms in Ghana and pave the way for amendments that address the needs of the country’s democratic system.
