After three years of self-imposed exile in SA and eSwatini, former President Ian Khama has returned to Botswana to appear in court. Khama’s former Vice-President, now President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, took over. News24 reports that the pair fell out in 2019, leading to Khama leaving the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) founded by his father Seretse Khama. Khama then joined the opposition party and actively campaigned for them in by-elections. In 2021, Khama faced 14 charges that included allegations of money laundering, handling stolen property and possession of five illegal firearms. Khama has maintained his innocence on the charges he faces, as well as pleading not guilty in a Gaborone court last week. Nyasha Mpani, a project leader at Institute of Justice and Reconciliation, said Khama enjoyed deep loyalty in his home region of Serowe. ‘His support base includes traditional leaders and some disillusioned members of the ruling BDP, who have followed him since his break from the party,’ Mpani said.
