High stakes for SA investment analyst in estate dispute

Publish date: 07 October 2024
Issue Number: 1097
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Litigation

When the High Court in eSwatini found prominent South African investment analyst Allan Gray’s Sandy McGregor unfit for the office of executor of his mother-in-law’s considerable estate, implementation of the shock decision was deferred pending McGregor’s appeal against his removal. Now, 15 months later, the matter has come to eSwatini’s highest court, but the judges have decided they have no option but to strike the appeal from the roll, with costs against McGregor and the other appellants. Among other problems, writes Carmel Rickard in her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, the judges said the record prepared by McGregor’s legal team was so defective that the court could not fairly hear the matter.
