Woman wins inheritance case

A Coptic Christian woman in Egypt says she has won a legal battle to receive the same inheritance as her brothers. Under the country's Islamic Sharia inheritance laws, female heirs inherit half the amount of male relatives. BBC News reports that Huda Nasrallah brought the case to test the legality of the statute. Two courts had earlier ruled against her. 'It is not really about inheritance. My father did not leave us millions of Egyptian pounds,' Nasrallah said, adding that 'I have the right to ask to be treated equally as my brothers'. Addressing the ruling, rights activist Ishak Ibrahim said the law assumed that if the Christian inheritance beneficiaries agreed on applying the Christian laws, it was divided equally. However, if they disagreed, Islamic Sharia was applied.
