Publish date: 20 May 2019

Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Uganda

Detained activist Dr Stella Nyanzi has been honoured by Solidarity Uganda for being a consistent human rights defender. Legalbrief reports that the Makerere University academic has been charged under the Computer Misuse Act over Facebook posts in which she criticised President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni. The Monitor reports that Jane Asinde, the programmes manager at Solidarity Uganda noted that Nyanzi has embodied the essence of a brave activist. ‘Despite being politically harassed for fighting against injustice in the country, Dr Nyanzi remains true to her own values,’ she said. The award was he received by Nyanzi's daughter Bah Baraka on her behalf. Amnesty International has urged the Ugandan authorities ‘to drop these absurd charges’ and ensure that Nyanzi is able to enjoy her human rights without any fear of intimidation or arrest.
