Deported lawyer seeks return to Kenya

Publish date: 18 March 2019
Issue Number: 815
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: A Matter of Justice

Prominent lawyer Miguna Miguna says he will return to Kenya in April and has requested the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to facilitate this. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, Miguna was deported to Canada during the 2017 post-election discord. He made headlines for his role in the mock swearing in of Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga as President. After being detained at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a year ago, Miguna said ‘my security is at stake and the people who are frustrating me here, are not immigration officers but the police’. He was then deported. The Daily Nation reports that Miguna is banking on a judgment by High Court Judge Chacha Mwita in December in which he ruled that the Kenyan-born lawyer has never lost his citizenship as claimed by state agents.
