Data demand drives MTN’s growth

Publish date: 15 August 2022
Issue Number: 990
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: General

* MTN saw mobile data revenue rise by 14.6% from R7.9bn to R9.04bn in its results for the half year to end June. Data revenue was up despite a 8.9% reduction in the effective rate of data across all MTN's business units. In MTN's results statement, it did not say anything on whether the move to level 6 load shedding had driven the rise in traffic. It's rival, Vodacom said there was a notable increase, with traffic on its networks rising as high as 20% during the rolling blackouts. Data traffic in Nigeria shot up 79.3% year-on-year.
