Bail setback for high-profile Ugandan prisoner

Publish date: 14 April 2025

Uganda’s High Court has rejected a bail application by the country’s most famous prisoner, President Yoweri Museveni’s former friend, colleague and personal physician, Kizza Besigye. After being abducted from Kenya, he was held in detention and charged before a court martial. Once the country’s highest court held that civilians could not be tried in military courts his case was reassigned to the civilian courts and he applied for release on bail. In a decision delivered last week, the court found he ticked all the legal boxes for the granting of bail. But, writes Carmel Rickard in her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, the judge hearing Besigye’s bail application still turned him down.
