Accused’s bail proposal ‘inappropriate’, judge rules

Publish date: 28 September 2026

Judgments on bail must be one of the most common issues for judicial decision, but Carmel Rickard says they are rarely as fascinating as one dated 16 September, written by Judge Redson Kapindu of Malawi’s High Court, financial crimes division. In her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, she explains the judge was dealing with a particularly unusual set of circumstances: Lin Yunhua had previously been convicted of money laundering and various wildlife offences and sentenced to 14 years. Now, facing additional charges for allegedly trying to corruptly influence prison staff, Yunhua put forward his own tailor-made bail proposal.
