Royalties claimed for background music

The Performing Rights Society in Scotland has launched a new drive in which it is targeting businesses that play background music – saying even they should pay royalties or switch off their radios.

The Scotsman reports thousands of shops, cafés and hairdressers have now been warned to pay for an annual licence to broadcast publicly. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has accused the PRS of being heavy-handed and says the demand, and the threat of legal action, has alarmed the owners of some small businesses.
