Lecturers at 31 public universities in Kenya have launched a nationwide strike over salary grievances. The Universities Academic Staff Union has issued a 21-day strike notice. The Daily Nation reports that the 9 000 lecturers are protesting against the delay in implementation of a new salary scale which would see them paid $97m in arrears. This is the third time that the academics will be striking this year. More than 500 000 students will have their classes disrupted. The previous two strikes lasted 55 days.
