ICT: International mobile roadmap out for comment

Comment is sought by 18 January 2019 on a draft roadmap for allocating international mobile telecommunications radio frequency spectrum, which was gazetted on Friday, reports Pam Saxby for Legalbrief Policy Watch. Building on radio frequency migration plan proposals released in August, the roadmap not only identifies suitable bands for international mobile telecommunications deployment, but also potential scenarios and timelines for migrating licensees out of or within these bands. This is noting government’s overarching policy imperatives of spectrum efficiency, the ‘universal availability of broadband services’, a ‘vibrant and competitive telecommunications industry’ and an environment that promotes and attracts investment. Informed by International Telecommunication Union and Southern African Development Community ‘perspectives’, the draft roadmap is underpinned by targets set in the 2016 White Paper on ICT.
