Former Zimbabwean VP gets bail in graft case

Former Zimbabwean Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko was yesterday granted bail after appearing in court on corruption charges. The authorities accused him of driving away from a police station on Tuesday where he was supposed to make a statement on allegations being levelled against him. BBC News reports that Mphoko served alongside President Emmerson Mnangagwa when Robert Mugabe was ousted by the military in November 2017. However, they subsequently had a fall out. His lawyer Zibusiso Ncube told the court that his client feared being detained and said claims that he was on the run are 'sensationalist'. Mnangagwa earlier this month fired Tourism Minister Prisca Mupfumira 'for conduct inappropriate for a Minister of government' after she was linked to the disappearance of millions of dollars from the country's pension fund.
