Comrades drip bags turned into school shoes

 

Hundreds of discarded intravenous drip bags and tubing used on Comrades race day will be turned into school shoes for children in need of new soles. The Comrades Marathon Association teamed up with long-standing medical service providers to go green on Sunday, when thousands of runners tackled the up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. This is part of a drive to maximise recycling initiatives with race day waste. Netcare and Adcock Ingram Critical Care have already started recycling the plastic bags from used, non-hazardous intravenous drips and polyvinyl chloride tubing, which will be made into shoes for schoolchildren in need. The partnership has culminated in the creation of a nonprofit company, My Walk. The eco-friendly initiative is a first for the Comrades medical facility.
