UK considers formalising plea bargains

Britain’s Home Office is proposing to formalise plea bargaining schemes to increase the number of defendants giving evidence in return for leniency.

The changes, reports The Telegraph, could result in terrorist suspects being offered reduced jail sentences or even immunity from prosecution in exchange for their co-operation and information about their networks. Whitehall officials believe the system should also apply in terrorist cases, where interrogators often encounter an unwillingness to talk that could be broken down by a prosecution deal.
