Third US State on brink of legalising gay marriage

Connecticut looks set to become the third state in the US that offers legal recognition to gay couples.

The Boston Globe reports the Legislature\'s Joint Judiciary Committee last week overwhelmingly endorsed legislation establishing civil unions, and supporters and opponents of the legislation each said the Bill would probably pass the House and Senate by early June, when the legislative session ends. Connecticut would be the first state to act on gay unions without prompting by the courts. In 2000, Vermont became the first in the nation to allow civil unions, after a ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court. In Massachusetts, a Supreme Judicial Court ruling legalised g ay marriage last year. Full report in The Boston Globe
