Tankers owners should have disclosed dangerous cargo

The Singapore Court of Appeal has upheld a High Court decision last year that the owners of a chemical tanker were liable for negligently failing to disclose the dangerous nature of the cargo that was transferred to another ship.

In the case before the court, reports The Business Times, a ship capsized when contaminated nitric acid was transferred into it. The High Court ruled in favour of the respondent, stressing that because of the dangerous nature of the cargo, the appellant had a duty to take reasonable care to prevent injury or damage to persons or property that were likely to come into contact with the substance.
