Skweyiya’s wife alleged to have benefited from Kebble generosity

Thuthukile Skweyiya, wife of Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya and a former ambassador to France, is one of several prominent business figures and politicians who benefited from slain mining magnate Brett Kebble’s largesse to be targeted by SARS.

She received more than R350 000 from Kebble after July, 2004, according to a report in the Sunday Times. Last month, ANC Youth League fundraiser and executive member Songezo Mjongile was the first Kebble beneficiary to be hauled before court. He allegedly failed to declare R4.8m he received between 2002 and last year. Mjongile and fellow Youth League member Lunga Ncwana were former directors of Kebble’s company Randgold & Exploration. The Sunday Times says it has documents that show that between February, 2004, and September last year — when Kebble was shot dead in his car — Ncwana received R6.5m. A lump sum of R5m was deposited into his account in one month alone. Almost R27m was paid out of Kebble’s various accounts during this period, with R8.6m going to several lawyers on his books.
