SABC in bid to secure broadcasting rights

The SABC has launched an urgent court interdict in the Johannesburg High Court to stop the Premier Soccer League (PSL) from negotiating new contracts with other broadcasters.

PSL\'s current broadcasting contract with the SABC comes to an end in May. Millions of rands are at stake and the PSL wants to get the best price the market can offer, notes SABC News. The PSL argued in court that it was not under any obligation to renew the contract with the public broadcaster and should be allowed to test the market. Trevor Phillips, the outgoing PSL CEO, says their job and mandate is to maximise their commercial rights and all they are looking for as far as TV rights are concerned is to get a fair market related value. The SABC argued that it had a verbal agreement with the PSL that the contract will be re-negotiated with the public broadcaster and it felt the PSL was breaching this agreement. A ruling is expected to be handed down today. Full SABC News report
