Proposed tax changes aimed at ending corruption

Government is proposing reducing local government’s already limited revenue collection powers to make the process more efficient and to reduce corruption, according to a Business Day report.

As report in Legalbrief Today, National Treasury proposed in a paper last month doing away with Regional Services Council levies and replacing them with an alternative system of taxes that will be administered by the SA Revenue Service. The aim is to root out corruption and make local authorities more capable of providing basic services. The structure of levy payments makes collection difficult, according to the Treasury.
