Mpofu silk status approved

Just over a month after Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa told the Farlam Commission that Advocate Dali Mpofu had approached him for assistance in getting his SC status approved, Mpofu has been made a silk, according to a Beeld report.

The struggle veteran and a leader of the EFF said he was honoured. Dumisa Ntsebeza SC said Mpofu deserved silk status for his hard work. He said the SC award does, however, put a focus on the slow pace of transformation in the profession. 'Mpofu is the 30th black advocate in 30 years at the Johannesburg Bar to get SC status. There are only two black women with SC status. It is a shame!' Ntsebeza asked whether SC awards for white advocates should not be delayed to tackle the inequality issue. The report notes Mpofu denied Ramaphosa's claims at the Farlam Inquiry at the time. Ramaphosa claimed he had asked Mpofu whether he was a silk. According to the Deputy President, Mpofu said he and other advocates were still awaiting the signature of President Jacob Zuma. 'He then asked me if I could do anything about it,' Ramaphosa told the commission. Mpofu said he merely told Ramaphosa that he, the son of Judge Ian Farlam and evidence leader Kameshni Pillay were all waiting for Zuma. Ramaphosa reportedly then promised to see what he could do about the situation. Full Beeld report
