Mining law change to remove investor obstacles
The Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act will be amended to remove obstacles to mining investments, Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said yesterday.
One of the areas to be addressed would be variances in the beneficiation requirements of the Act, she said. A Business Day report notes that her remarks come after several months of mounting criticism from the industry over the length of time it takes to secure mining licences and disagreements over interpretation of the Act. Minerals and Energy Department Director-General Sandile Nogxina did not give any additional details on the proposed amendments, which are intended to address certain unintended consequences in the drafting of the original Act. However, the principles underlying the legislation remain intact. Full Business Day report
