McBride sues newspaper for R3.6m over editorials

Ekurhuleni Metro Police chief Robert McBride is suing a daily newspaper for R3.6m for defamation in the Johannesburg High Court.

A report in The Mercury says the claim arises from a series of editorials that The Citizen published before McBride’s appointment in 2003 as head of the metro police. McBride is suing the paper, Acting Editor Martin Williams, former Editor Kevin Keogh, and columnist Andrew Kenny jointly and severally. He says the editorials suggested he was not suited for the position because he was a ‘criminal and a murderer’. This related to McBride’s involvement in the bombing of Magoo’s Bar in Durban in 1986.
