Language board set to enter schools dispute and other brief reports

* A case brought by three Northern Cape schools over a provincial decision to enforce dual-medium tuition was adjourned to today to allow submissions from the SA Language Board. Education MEC Archie Lucas said the schools and the department had made their presentations to the Kimberley High Court on whether the decision on dual-medium education should be enforced. – Business Day

* Sixty-two alleged mercenaries were expected to arrive in SA this morning after serving sentences for immigration and other offences in a Zimbabwe jail. – News24 * The Afrikanerbond (AB) has withdrawn funding for the court action of three Northern Cape schools over a decision by the province to enforce dual medium tuition. The AB said the organisation ceased its financial support as it believed the matter could be settled out of court. – IoL * The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court has postponed until next Tuesday the bail application of Dan Mokoena, the boyfriend of shot television star Lindiwe Cibi. The actress is in intensive care in hospital. – The Herald * A Johannesburg man, Emmanuel Morake (38) has been sentenced to life in jail after pleading guilty to murdering his friend Peter Molefe\'s wife, Miriam, on July 19 2001 for R5 000. Molefe, a former SABC video operator, has pleaded not guilty and will be tried separately. His trial is expected to begin today (Thursday). – The Star * Johannes Rakgalakane has made history when he became the first SA student to receive a BA court interpreting degree through Unisa this week. There are 100 registered students doing the course. – Pretoria News * The manufacturer of Champion Dog Food, Driehoek Renhonde, has paid an admission of guilt fine of R5 000 for producing sub-standard dog food. The fine comes after an Advertising Standards Authority ruling a year ago against Champion for printing false and misleading content declarations and performance promises on its packaging. The directorate\'s ruling also said: ‘the food is in fact a lethal product if used as a sole source of a dog\'s nutrition’. – The Mercury
