Judge gets tough with Noupoort

The Noupoort Christian Care Centre should respond to allegations of mismanagement and human rights abuses before continuing with its urgent court application, ruled Pretoria High Court yesterday.

However, Noupoort\'s lawyers decided instead to continue with their application for a temporary registration certificate – which would prevent the government\'s planned closure of the drug rehabilitation centre on March 31. The report, compiled by a panel of 12 experts, contained allegations of financial mismanagement and human rights abuses – in most cases by unqualified recovered addicts. It also expressed serious concerns about the assessment and treatment of patients in the centre, which operates from the Northern Cape town of Noupoort. The judge warned the centre that it proceeded with the application ‘at its peril’ if it did not respond to the allegations. Full report on the News24 site
