JSC committee to consider steps against Fidentia judge

The JSC's Conduct Committee is to consider possible steps against Western Cape Judge Anton Veldhuizen for his handling of the J Arthur Brown matter, Beeld reports. A full Bench of the SCA suggested Veldhuizen should be censured.

JSC secretary Sello Chibane said they were not immediately aware of the sharp criticism by the SCA. 'Now that it has been brought under our attention the judgment will be referred to the JSC's Judicial Conduct Committee to study and to decide if there are grounds for steps against the judge.' Appeal Judge Mahomed Navsa said Veldhuizen's interference in the Brown matter was to the detriment of the state and transgressed the boundaries of acceptable judicial behaviour. NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube said the agency had no plans to take the matter further. 'The SCA censured the judge in its judgment and it was said on record.' The SCA overturned Brown's sentence of a R150 000 fine and replaced it with a sentence of direct imprisonment for 15 years. Full Beeld report
