Johann Rupert raises concern over 'rule of law' in SA

Remgro chairman Johann Rupert - one of the country's most influential investors - says corruption and red tape have become 'pervasive' in SA, harming the business and investment climate, notes a Business Day report.

'Sometimes I wonder how people still do business in SA with the red tape and corruption - it's pervasive,' he told Remgro shareholders in Somerset West yesterday. According to the report, Rupert said his biggest concern in SA was the rule of law. 'There is interfering in the courts with the appointment of judges. The biggest insult is that they (government) don't seem to care what we think.' Rupert also took a swipe at trade unions for stymying efforts to educate children. 'We are failing another generation. One cannot have high minimum wages without education,' he is quoted as saying. Full Business Day report (subscription needed)
