Gay marriage battles continue across US

Battles over the legal definition of marriage are still continuing in some US states, while court rulings in other states have dealt a blow to Gay activists fight for equal rights.

The Washington Times reports that in Louisiana, the state Supreme Court has refused to hear challenges to the state\'s proposed legislative amendment, which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and has cleared the way for a September 18 vote on the issue. Similarly, in Michigan, the state Court of Appeals told officials to put the marriage amendment on the November 2 ballot. But the Michigan case may not be over. The Coalition for a Fair Michigan, which opposes the amendment, is considering an appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court. In Arkansas and Oklahoma, lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union have filed lawsuits in their state Supreme Courts to block votes on marriage amendments. And in Ohio, a lawyer representing civil rights groups has challenged marriage amendment petitions in at least 10 counties. Full report in The Washington Times
