Former NEF boss could face criminal prosecution, and other brief reports

* The National Empowerment Fund had forwarded the case of alleged misappropriation of funds by its former CE, Sydney Maree, to the Department of Public Prosecutions for criminal prosecution, the Director-General of the Department of Trade and Industry, Alistair Ruiters, said yesterday. The fund forwarded the case after Maree resigned on August 13 – the day that an internal hearing was scheduled.– Business Report

* Seven police officers are to be suspended following an expose on SABC television showing police allegedly demanding bribes from prostitutes and their clients in Johannesburg suburbs. Criminal charges against them are to be pursued. – IoL * Kananellie Hatzikonstandinou, accused of murdering an 81-year-old shopper by slitting her throat at the Cresta shopping centre in Johannesburg this week, appeared in the Randburg Regional Court yesterday. The case was postponed to October 30 for observation at Sterkfontein Hospital. Hatzikonstandinou was meanwhile remanded to the hospital section of Johannesburg Women\'s Prison. – SABC News * Two men, including a 69-year-old traditional healer, Petrus Kgabi, and Moses Mmako (50), appeared in the Seshego Magistrates’ Court outside Polokwane yesterday in connection with the suspected muti killing in August of 10-year-old Sello Chokoe. The suspects will be back in court on October 11 for a formal bail application. – SABC News
