Correctional Services facing damning 'Sunday Rapist' allegations

Serious questions about the functioning of Correctional Services are raised in a Beeld report that claims the so-called 'Sunday Rapist' attacked six of his victims in the hours he was supposed to be performing community service for a previous conviction.

According to a Beeld report, Jaco Steyn (35) rarely reported for his community service obligation at the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp. This was for the indecent assault of three girls. The paper claims Steyn also received at least 25 verbal warnings for parole violations between 2010 and 2011, but that nobody at Correctional Services took any further action or informed the Parole Board, despite the fact that his parole should have been reconsidered after the second transgression. As part of his earlier sentence, Steyn was required to undergo therapy with psychologist Eugene Kemp. Kemp said he treated Steyn 'only a few times after his sentence'. Steyn has confessed to committing more than 30 crimes of rape, kidnapping and murder. Full Beeld report
