Chaos in court after accused attacks policeman

Chaos erupted in the Cape High Court yesterday after one of eight accused in a gang trial attacked a policeman and had to be subdued with pepper spray, says a report in The Citizen.

The incident came shortly after Judge Anton Veldhuizen postponed the case to May 2 for sentencing procedures. The eight men, all members of the Fancy Boys gang, were convicted last week on a string of charges. Most of them have been found guilty on charges under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act of participating in the activities of a criminal gang. The so-called ‘kingpin’, Shamiel Eyssen, has also been convicted of racketeering. Though there have been previous convictions under Poca, this is believed to be the first conviction under the Act for membership of a criminal gang. Full report on The Citizen site
