Brazils biggest corruption trial begins
In what has been described as Brazils biggest corruption case, the former mayor of São Paulo and several public works contractors have gone on trial for allegedly stealing $1.7bn in public funds.
Paulo Maluf and his family are accused of having pocketed $450m from public works during his term from 1993 to 1996, reports the Financial Times. Maluf denies the charges, saying they are linked to an ongoing election campaign. The case has highlighted government efforts to address concerns about corruption. Full report in the Financial Times
