Banks want to sell cars of drunken drivers

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) could allow banks to auction the seized cars of drunken drivers to recoup monies still owed to them by the offenders, according to a Cape Argus report.

The unit is to meet Banking Council representatives on Friday to discuss the issue. This comes after major banks – such as Absa, Standard and FNB\'s Wesbank – approached the unit to allow banks to auction the vehicles instead of the vehicles being auctioned by the state. The state can sell cars as soon as a final attachment order is obtained. Full Cape Argus report
