Actress judged to be mentally ill, and other brief reports

* Actress Brenda Kameru, who is accused of killing her two-year-old son, has been declared mentally ill and will not stand trial. Magistrate Herman Badenhorst told Kameru that she would remain at Sterkfontein Hospital permanently. – The Mercury

* The Johannesburg High Court has denied bail to Ashwin Lawrence (22) and Darryl Bashing (20), who are accused of stabbing a 15-year-old schoolboy to death and setting him alight. The trial of the two men, accused of Sebastin May\'s murder in November 2002, is scheduled to begin on April 18, 2005. – IoL * Two of the accused in the Boeremag treason trial in Pretoria have fired their legal representative. Johan and Wilhelm Pretorius have told judge Eben Jordaan that they believe the workload of their Legal Aid Board-appointed advocate, Bennie Brummer, is too heavy. – SABC News * The trial of Sontu Sunday Malatjie (30), accused of raping 25 girls, was postponed in the Mankweng Sexual Offences Court near Polokwane yesterday because the prosecutor wasn\'t available. The accused will appear again on January 28. – News24 * The SA Law Reform Commission, working with other law enforcement agencies, has proposed changes to the civil and criminal law to provide effective legal protection to all victims of stalking. The deadline for comments on the paper has passed and the commission will now integrate the proposals and submit a report to the Justice Minister. – Cape Times * Essy Marry Jane Mbuyane, who began experiencing serious bladder problems after a botched Caesarean section operation two years ago, is demanding R1.55m in damages from the Mpumalanga Health Department. She turned down the department\'s offer for her to undergo further surgery to sort out her problem. – The Sunday Times
