Legislation: Legal Practice Council regulations gazetted
Regulations among other things prescribing the procedures to be followed and criteria to be met in electing legal practitioners to the South African Legal Practice Council were gazetted on Friday, reports Legalbrief Policy Watch. This is in anticipation of a media briefing tomorrow at which Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha is expected to ‘outline the election process’ and provide further insights into the 2014 Legal Practice Act’s implementation.
As Legalbrief Today has already reported, a final draft of the regulations was approved by the National Assembly and NCOP committees concerned on 23 August. It was apparently endorsed by both Houses six days later. Other issues addressed in the gazetted regulations include the practical vocational training requirements with which candidate attorneys and pupils will be expected to comply before being admitted as legal practitioners – and the right of pupils to appear in court or any other institution on behalf of persons supervising their training.
