Staff steal R3.4m from uShaka and Convention Centre
Employees defrauded Durban's International Convention Centre (ICC) and uShaka Marine World of a combined R3.4m in the past financial year.
A report in The Mercury says fraudulent electronic payments cost the ICC R1.6m, while uShaka lost R1.8m through cash theft and manipulation of ticket sales. ICC spokesperson Sandy le Brasse said a former employee had stolen money via bank transfers in 2007. The employee, who died shortly after being caught, had been charged and the stolen money retrieved from his pension fund. The fraud had been picked up by the ICC's chief executive during routine monitoring and checking. At uShaka, it appears that seven employees in the cash and ticketing offices were involved in theft. Acting chief operations officer Shawn Thompson said four had been dismissed and three had resigned, adding: 'An insurance payout of R810 000 was received and the balance of R996 000 written off.'
