False Web sites have bankers worried
Increasing numbers of Internet banking customers are being lured to fictitious Web sites despite efforts by banks to protect customers banking information and passwords.
And while fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated at gaining Pin numbers and passwords, there does not seem to be anyone with the ability to keep up with them, says a report in The Mercury. Christopher Riley, founder of the community crime fighting Web site (www.crimestop.co.za), said the incidence of false sites sites that mirrored authentic sites was increasing and consumers needed to be more vigilant when banking online. While banks were dealing with these sites as they arose, it appeared they were merely playing a game of catch-up. Riley said an exploratory meeting of key players in the banking and internet service provider industries had been held recently to create a united front against criminals. But while banks are showing concern and are talking to various quarters of the industry, nothing concrete has been resolved, he said. The Mercury report not available online
