Axed Post Office boss says firing is blow to graft fight

He accused Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri of failing to apply ‘impartial’ and ‘independent’ judgment, says Business Day. Following a forensic investigation by SizweNtsaluba, Matsepe-Casaburri said in March that she would fire Mampeule from the Post Office board as she had ‘lost confidence’ in him, and the relationship between him and the rest of the board had broken down. Mampeule has been at the centre of board rifts at the Post Office in the past year, firstly for laying criminal charges against his predecessor, Maanda Manyatshe, over a disputed contract, and then for clashing with Post Office chair Phuti Tsukudu. Mampeule described his firing as a ‘missed opportunity’ to stifle corruption. ‘It’s very unfortunate that the work I started doing of ensuring we create a world-class and corruption-free organisation is being stifled,’ he said. Although Matsepe-Casaburri as the shareholder had the power to remove him from the Post Office board, Mampeule can only be fired from the organisation entirely by the Post Office after a disciplinary hearing.
