SA hake harvest could be helped

A public-private partnership model to rebuild and sustainably harvest SA\'s declining hake stocks was presented to stakeholders in Port Elizabeth recently, notes a report in The Herald.

Marine and Coastal Management high seas fisheries management director Theressa Frantz said the aim was to rebuild the fishery to make a long-term harvest possible. The effect of the total allowable catch cuts as well as the new model would be carefully monitored, she said. The new model is premised on the challenge of trying to match the catching power of a vessel to the amount of fish allocated to it. Presently, the hake fishing season is open throughout the year. With the new model, the limitation of sea days is now also factored in. Full report in The Herald
