Legislation: Input sought on reworked Environmental Laws Bill

Publish date: 05 February 2019
Issue Number: 591
Diary: Legalbrief Environmental

Written submissions are sought by 28 February on a ‘D’ version of the 2017 National Environmental Management Laws Amendment, a highly technical piece of legislation has been extensively reworked since it was tabled and, among other things, now provides for an air quality licence revocation administrative appeal process (Parliamentary Monitoring Group).

As Legalbrief Today has already reported, once in force it will affect a raft of mining-related activities as well as waste management, integrated coastal management, air quality control, biodiversity management and protected areas. The Joint Rules of Parliament require that, as a section 76 Bill, it is subjected to a thorough public participation process in the provincial legislatures, possibly involving more localised hearings.
