Former President accused of demanding stake in firm

New documents and an alleged first-hand account claim that former President Jacob Zuma demanded €1m in cash and a 15% stake in a waste-tyre recycling company – conveyed through fixer Roy Moodley. News24 reports that the allegation emerges from a batch of documents sent to Forestry, Fisheries & Environment Minister David Maynier and Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment, by Hermann Erdmann, the CEO of the Recycling & Economic Development Initiative of SA (Redisa). Redisa is a non-profit company that held a government-approved Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan. Funded by a levy on new tyre sales, it was SA’s only fully operational waste-tyre recycling programme at the time. Erdmann and Redisa executive director Stacey Jansen provided further detail on the alleged meeting with Zuma, their drive with Moodley and how it came to be. According to their account, detailed in the dossier, the Redisa executives were introduced to Moodley, then the treasurer-general of the SA National Civic Organisatio in July 2015. Moodley ostensibly advised he was able to ‘lobby at the highest level’ and believed the programmes should be presented to Zuma, it read. He allegedly then undertook to arrange meetings with Zuma and government departments. At a later meeting in August that year, Moodley allegedly said he was scheduling a meeting with Zuma to present the General Waste Plan Model and its potential for economic growth and job creation. In late September, Jansen, Erdmann and Moodley allegedly took the trip to Zuma’s homestead. The executives said before they drove to the compound with Moodley and a driver in an armoured BMW SUV, the vehicle stopped at Royal Security – Moodley’s company – where Moodley allegedly retrieved a large black bag.
