Zambia’s judiciary in turmoil amid political tussles

After a recommendation by Zambia’s Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC), three Constitutional Court judges have been removed from Office by the President, Hakainde Hichilema. Marked ‘confidential’, that report by the JCC has, however, been made public by some unknown person. Now the report – and Hichilema’s decision to sack the three judges – are proving controversial. As Carmel Rickard writes in her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, they show a judicial system in Zambia gripped by a number of problems as politicians jostle to use the judiciary for their own purposes.
