West Coast cable repairs on track

It will still take a month for damaged subsea Internet infrastructure near the Ivory Coast to be repaired. The cables caused widespread internet disruptions on 14 March when they were damaged. Many ISPs rerouted traffic on to alternate cables in the immediate aftermath of the breaks. Four fibre-optic subsea cables snapped at the same time off the West Coast, causing widespread internet outages in a host of African countries. Vodacom spokesperson Byron Kennedy told News24 that two cable repair ships had been dispatched to the site of the breaks. Vodacom expects all, bar one of the cables, to be repaired before the end of April. The Ghanaian Communications regulator said repairs to all of the cables are expected to be completed by early May, although the timelines are subject to change.
