US targets South Sudanese VP

The US has targeted South Sudan's Vice President Taban Deng Gai with sanctions after accusing him of ordering the deaths of two opposition leaders. The US Treasury Department said Deng also has created distrust that has inflamed conflict in the country and undermined the peace process. A report on the News24 site notes that it accused him of arranging and directing the disappearance and deaths of human rights lawyer Samuel Dong Luak and SPLM-IO member Aggrey Idry ‘in order to solidify his position within President Kiir's Government and to intimidate members of the SPLM-IO’. ‘The US calls on all nations to exclude from the international financial system those who jeopardise South Sudan's future,’ said Treasury secretary Justin Muzinich.
