UN flags major DRC massacre

A UN investigation has revealed that violence in the DRC last year may amount to crimes against humanity. It says at least 500 people were killed, including families burnt alive in their homes. BBC News reports that ethnic violence broke out when members of the Batende community attacked Banunu villages ‘with extreme violence and speed’ after the Banunu residents attempted to bury a traditional chiefs on the other community's land. The death toll could be considerable higher because it is believed many bodies were thrown into the Congo River.
